E-Flite Blade mSR RTF
AUGUST 1, 2009

Weighing just one ounce, the nimble Blade® mSR RTF takes ultra-micro helicopter performance to a whole new level. At the heart of its performance is a unique Bell-Hiller rotor head design that provides the kind of speed and agility you would expect of a single-rotor heli but maintains a measure of positive stability similar to a co-axial heli. This blend of agility and stability makes it the ideal “next step” for someone moving up from a coaxial heli, such as the Blade CX3 or Blade mCX.

Two versions are available: Ready-To-Fly and Bind-N-Fly. Both come from the factory completely assembled and flight tested with two 120mAh 1-cell Li-Po batteries and E-flite’s handy Celectra™ 4-Port Battery Charger which can charge up to 4 mSR batteries at once, on the go or with the included power supply. The only difference is the inclusion of E-flite’s compact MLP4DSM 4-channel transmitter with the Ready-To-Fly version. The Bind-N-Fly version comes without the transmitter for customers who already have a DSM2™ aircraft transmitter.

G-Force ProStart released (patent pending) for nitro Helis
JUNE 17, 2009

G-Force ProStart for Nitro Helis

The G-Force ProStart will take starting nitro engines to a new level in the industry by utilizing worldwide availability of cordless drill/drivers.

In fact, many pilots around the world have been starting 50 and 90 sized engines using cordless drill/drivers for years.

Benefit and convenience of using cordless drill/drivers for starting nitro engines.

Todays cordless drill/driver is a refined workhorse tool that is commonly bundled with quick-change fast charging batteries with a charger and a carrying case. These batteries are either NiCad or Lithium Ion. With the ease of being able to quick battery changes, a pilot can have all the available starting power with convenience. A cordless drill/driver with a 200 in-lb rating is suitable for 50-sized helis, versus ratings of 400 in-lb of torque is needed to start a 90-size engine with ease. An adjustable clutch is used to prevent damage to a possible hydro-locked engine. The cordless drill/driver also has an rpm range of around 1200 rpm to 1500 rpm, which does not over spin a nitro engine during starting.

Cordless drill/driver challenge for engine starting without G-Force ProStart

Since cordless drill/drivers were never designed to start heli engines but to drill and drive screws. Once the cordless drill/drivers clutch slips and re-engages, the hammering effect and shock will be transmitted directly to the nitro engine that is being started.

G-Force ProStart product design and features The G-Force ProStart (patent pending) is an anti-shock drill/driver adaptor which is designed to isolate the shock generated from the cordless drill/drivers from getting to the helis engine drive train. The G-Force ProStart uses dampers that isolate the shock from the cordless drill/driver to the nitro engine and the heli clutch system. The G-Force ProStart also incorporates additional dampers to soak the wobble vibration that can occur from long 6mm hex starter wands.

The G-Force ProStart will work with most of todays starter wands. The G-Force ProStart has a standard 7mm hole for accepting the common 6mm hex starter wands. Optional 8mm and 5/16 shaft adapters are available for those who use clamp-on starter wands. G-Force also has available cone starter for RC planes as well.

• GFA7066 G-Force ProStart for 7mm shafts with 6mm hex drive
• GFA7067 8mm adaptor shaft
• GFA7068 5/16 adaptor shaft
• GFA7069 aluminum drive cone

New Emergency Response Technology Demonstrated by Boeing

A newly developed wireless multi-hop technology is set to dramatically improve the ability of emergency services personnel to obtain reliable, high-quality video footage from surveillance aircraft and combine it in real-time with other types of incoming data, thus providing them with a potentially crucial new grasp of relevant information during crisis situations. Boeing Research & Technology, the advanced research and development organization at Boeing, recently staged a demonstration of the new technology, which was developed by Boeing researchers in conjunction with Professor Natasha Neogi of the Information Trust Institute (ITI) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Dr. Jae H. Kim of Boeing Research & Technology led the research project as Principal Investigator and Program Manager. The research that resulted in the development of the new technology was funded by the U.S. Office of Naval Research.

The new technology makes it possible to communicate via mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) that may form and break apart in unpredictable ways, while still maintaining trustworthy connectivity. That approach is unlike current surveillance technologies, which place heavy reliance on ground units controlled from a centralized point of command. The new technology instead allows decentralized control among a scattered group of communicating nodes, which could include both stationary and mobile units on the ground as well as airborne networks of uninhabited aerial vehicles.

The Boeing demonstration, which took place April 23 at the NASA Dryden Flight Research Center at Edwards Air Force Base in California, presented the new technology to an audience that included representatives of the U.S. Office of Naval Research. The demonstration used a network consisting of stationary and mobile units on the ground, including small roving carts carrying small mobile routers, and an airborne network consisting of radio-controlled model planes that were built from kits produced by Hobbico, Inc. of Champaign, Illinois and piloted by Hobbico employees. The researchers then broadcast video among the various nodes on the network, and found that the stationary and roving carts were able to receive good-quality video data from the planes at any time, even when some network links were broken.

The technological innovation consisted of taking protocols that were originally designed to work in static situations with earthbound units, and altering them in an online fashion so that they would work in dynamic situations involving aerial vehicles as well as ground units. Such dynamic situations have much worse connectivity than static situations, making video transmission much more difficult.

Neogi says that the new technology should have great value for some applications, particularly in the context of search and rescue missions. “Firefighters could maintain situational awareness of a fire in progress, including the positions of other firefighters and resources, by obtaining information from handheld units,” she explains. “‘Bird’s-eye-view’ video footage provided by small aircraft drones could be made available to them, along with data provided from other perspectives on the scene, such as small cameras installed on firefighters’ hats.” The technology could have even greater value in the context of a larger disaster, like an earthquake, where rescuers might otherwise have difficulty negotiating partially impassable road systems or avoiding downed power lines. “That was a big problem in Hurricane Katrina,” Neogi points out. “They weren’t able to coordinate air and ground coverage during the rescue operation.”

Neogi, who is an expert in aerospace systems and control, holds appointments in the Department of Aerospace Engineering and the Coordinated Science Laboratory as well as the Information Trust Institute at Illinois. She is also co-leader of a project studying theoretical safety assurance and security assessment in the Information Trust Institute’s Boeing Trusted Software Center.

Horizon Hobby
MAY 19, 2009

Horizon Hobby Inc. is proud to announce that we will be releasing our new Model 12R ‘The Beast’ tm in the near future. This model, along with the full-size ‘Beast’ was a crowd favorite at the Joe Nall Fly-in last week at Triple Tree Aerodrome in Woodruff, SC.

The airplane design has been a collaboration between the full scale builder/designer Mr. Kevin Kimball and our very own Quique Somenzini. Kevin Kimball has secured copyrights on the outline of the airplane, the color scheme and he has trademarked the ‘Beast’ name; Quique has the exclusive rights to use these three items in model aircraft. This project has evolved over the past 24 months and Joe Nall turned out to be the perfect place to unveil the duo together.

The full scale ‘Beast’ is owned and piloted by Bryan Jensen and he intends to make limited appearances in 2009 and begin a full slate of Airshows beginning with the 2010 Airshow season.
